Out Of The Cake Box

Out of the cake box, a special enough name and do their cakes really live up to its name “Out of the Box”? Yes we would say and it’s a really cosy homestyle cakery that you want to pig out on a weekend with your besties over cake, coffee and tea and good oldies songs of 周杰伦.

We had a tea party on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and had the chance to savour most of the cakes available! We hummed along with the tunes “让 我 们 乘 着 阳 光, 海 上 冲 浪 吸 引 她 目 光 ~~”

We started off with the Rose Lychee ($5.50) with rosewater sponge layers, fresh lychee bits and strawberry jelly. It tasted light yet refreshing  and smelt of rose fragrance and is definitely one of the cakes that I would consider getting for upcoming mother’s day!

Then, this striking yellow Mango Sticky Rice CAKE ($6.00) – Mango Mousse Cake with coconut sticky rice and fresh mango. It essentially spells PeRfEcT –sweetened (but not overly sweet) coconut milk flavoured rice with ripe juicy mango. You have to order this (act fast!) if you are a Mango Sticky Rice lover as it is a seasonal cake and not available all-time.

Chocolate lovers will be delighted at this dirty chocolate cake ($6.80) Dark chocolate mousse with brownie bites and chocolate dirt littered by the side.

Jasmine-Yuzu Cheesecake ($6.50) that is polished with jasmine-infused glaze on top: We liked the silky smooth texture of the cheesecake comprising of two delicate layers; baked yuzu and rare jasmine.

Avocado Cheesecake ($6.50) a.k.a the: creamy avocado with premium grade gula Melaka. A pity the cake crumbles too easily upon touch, so it ends up a messy affair. The base of the cake was rather special, a rather acquired taste of fermented red beancurd 南乳.Does it resembles the shape of a mouse here?

Lastly, in tune with SG50, the cakes are given a local twist to it. First, the White Rabbit ($6.50) – Matcha Sponge, white rabbit candy lava with black sesame brittle (homemade) – $6.50. We have all heard much about chocolate, salted egg, taro, matcha and even red bean lava cake. But white rabbit candy (大白兔奶糖)lava, had you? It brings back memories of nostalgia as it’s my all-time favourite childhood sweets. A thing that left me puzzled – how come matcha sponge cake is not green ah?

There is also the Chendol Fudge ($6.50) with layers of coconut gula Melaka fudge and familiar chendol toppings like red bean, green starched jelly noodle and atap seed.

Out of the Cake Box offers a plethora of cakes and pastries to choose from and even customised creations ranging from cupcakes, macarons to novelty full cakes!

Due to my liking for the light rose lychee cake, I made an order for it good for 30-35pax at ~$141 for my Grandmother’s birthday.

Due to the spongey-soft nature of the lychee cake, decoration was kept to minimal but we were delighted at the intricate design of the roses by the perimeter of the cake! Thanks Dana and Yuzhong for accommodating to my demands for the ordering of the cake!
