Ippin Cafe Bar – Japanese Food with the taste of Home
Adding on to the Mohamed Sultan Road that already houses Chikuwa Tei and Spathe Public House, Ippin Café Bar, a new home concept Japanese Café offers comfort Japanese food at affordable prices. It is more than a café as it also sells Japanese Snacks (Nuts, Wasabi, Genmaicha tea leaves) and non-food products like washi fiber clothing.
Oyakudon Set – comfort bowl of chicken and egg which comes with miso soup and hojicha dessert. ($15) The slight mushy rice was flavorful as it has absorbed the dashi stock used for the boiling of chicken.
Grilled Oyster & Veggies in Ponzu Sauce (yuzu vinegar) / Fried Oyster Set – served with Nikujaga pork and potato stew, soup, salad and dessert ($20)
Apart from the usual sencha served in most Japanese Restaurant like Sushi Tei or Sakae Sushi, Ippin also serves genmaicha and hojicha where the former is stronger in taste whereas the latter is lower in caffeine and more suitable for kids. My personal preference is the more aromatic genmaicha.
Ippin Café Bar might not have an extensive menu like other Japanese restaurants but it serves up affordable Japanese set at nett prices in the quiet hidden location, ideal for a cozy dinner after work. It gives me a homely feel here and this is home truly (* sings Kit Chan *)
