Guide to Matcha Swiss Rolls in Singapore – Rolling In The Deep

You are my poison and my antidote

Being Matchaholics, we go for anything matcha, loving its subtle tea flavour and beautiful color. Matcha desserts range from cakes, lava cakes, cheese cakes, brownies to swiss rolls. We went on a roll eating swiss rolls and discovered a few lesser-known ones as well.

So what defines a good matcha swiss roll? A soft and fluffy sponge texture with velvety delicate matcha cream piped in beautiful spirals and one strikes a balance between bitter and sweet.

We claimed this to be the best Matcha Swiss Roll (Matcha Sponge + matcha cream) in Singapore – Sponge roll with an intensely flavored matcha cream interior. Soft and moist cream spiraled up in the delicate matcha sponge with generous cream to sponge ratio! It is the feeling of bliss at every bite!

100 Tras Street #01-14 100AM, Singapore 079027 (Google Map)

Price: $5.20/pcs, $29.90/whole

Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm

Other Outlets: 313 Somerset B3-53; The Central @ Clark Quay #01-74

As seen in the picture above, the matcha cream has solidified into some kind of thick whipped cream lump and the sponge texture was dry.

In conclusion, a lackluster piece of swiss roll. While their matcha swiss roll disappoints, other matcha desserts such as matcha parfait and matcha float at Tsujiri remain delectable and offer a rich taste of matcha still. If only the standard of the swiss roll matches up to the rest.

The Plain Jane

The Swiss roll was dense and moist, generously filled with matcha cream a hint of green tea fragrance and bitterness, just the way I like my matcha swiss roll to be!

In our humble opinion, we rank the Matcha Swiss Rolls (matcha sponge & matcha cream) in the order of:

1. Redpan / Dulcet & Studio (Best)

2. The Plain Jane

3. Tsujiri

Matcha and Azuki Beans is like the marriage of bitterness and sweetness; a great pairing like Peanut Butter and Jam. Listed below are different variations of this version of Swiss Roll!

** The swiss rolls at Wa Cafe and Watanabe Coffee are identical so you can get it at either.

There is an airy dry texture of this roll cake that makes it light and resembled that of a chiffon cake with a strong aroma of matcha.

The cake is cottony and soft while the filling is fresh cream from Hokkaido with azuki beans. We would have preferred the whipped cream to be spiked with matcha though. But we need second thoughts on buying it again given it price tag of $8.20++.

There’s a tea time promotion where you can get a cake set – the roll and beverage at $11.80++ at Wa Cafe.

Rive Gauche Singapore
68 Orchard Road #B2-57 plaza Singapura, 238839 (Google Map)

Price: $4.50 for an entire roll

Opening Hours: 10am – 930pm daily

At a first glance, the Matcha Swiss Roll was much smaller in size. But at $4.50 for an entire roll, we don’t have much to complain.

Rice Gauche’s matcha Swiss roll has jasmine flavour infused within it to give it a light and refreshing take which kinda overpower the matcha taste. The roll was slightly on the dry side but was well complemented by the fresh cream and azuki beans.

Matcha Swiss Roll Rich & Good Cake Shop 2

Rich & Good Cake Shop
24 Kandahar Street Singapore 198887 (Google Map)

Price: $8 for an entire roll

Opening Hours: 8.30am – 5pm (Mon-Sat)

I am sure most of us would have heard about Rich & Good Cake Shop that sells one of the best traditional swiss rolls. Other than the ever popular kaya and Mao Shan Wang durian, they have the green tea swiss roll as well and so how does it fare?

Just like the other flavours, the sponge layers are dense yet velvety soft. But the matcha taste was really weak and we found it a little too sweet and creamy for our liking. Kaya one FTW!

Matcha Swiss Roll Proofer Boulangerie

Proofer Boulangerie
133 Chinatown Point #B1-46 New Bridge Road Singapore 059413 (Google Map)

Price: $2.90 for a slice

Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm  daily

We randomly chance upon this while hunting for Dough & Grain’s swiss roll. The dense roll with a subtle green tea fragrance has red bean chunks with interior wall of cream cheese that gets a little too cloying and sweet.

Flor Patisserie

Address: 2 Duxton Hill, #01-01, Singapore 089588 (Google Map)

Price: $8.00 per slice; $47 for a whole roll

Opening Hours: 11am – 9pm daily

Smooth red bean in swiss roll of honey-infused green tea sponge. The red bean cream flavour was faint but its subtle sweetness complemented the bitterness of the matcha. Overall, the prettiest piece of matcha Swiss roll – topped with strawberries and azuki. We wished that the Kyoto-uji green tea cream (atop of the roll) was piped into the swiss roll as well

Chef Icon Nature Bakery

Address: 5 Kampong Bahru Road, Singapore 169341 (Google Map)

Price: $18.80 for whole roll

Opening Hours: 8am – 8pm (Mon-Fri), 8am – 7pm (Sat), Closed Sun

Link: Facebook / Instagram

Chef Icon Bakery only sells their Chef Roll (matcha & red bean) by the entire roll. Not the usual spiraled up swiss roll but instead the cream and red beans are cratered in the centre. The cake to cream ratio is pretty generous and the thick beany azuki cuts through the sweetness. Matcha taste could have been stronger but I think this will appeal to mums and the office ladies!

Matcha Swiss Roll Dough & Grains

Dough & Grains

Address: 133 Chinatown Point #B1-46 New Bridge Road Singapore 059413 (Google Map)

Price: $1.40 for a slice

Opening Hours: 730am – 930pm daily

Other Outlets: Century Square #B1-18, Lot 1 #B1-K31

Just so you know, Dough & Grains specializes in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) infused bread with different health benefits.

Green Tea sponge layer (mild taste) with vanilla cream resembles a typical swiss roll you can get from neighbourhood bakery. The roll was quite thin that it could barely stands as in the picture. But at $1.40 a slice, this is one of the cheapest matcha swiss roll we had in the quest of doing up this list.

Matcha Swiss Roll Asanoya 1

Asanoya Bakery Singapore

Address: 15 Queen Street, Wilby Central, Singapore 188537 (Google Map)

Price: $2.80 per slice, $12.80 whole roll

Opening Hours: 9am – 8pm (Mon-Sun)

Matcha Swiss Roll Asanoya 2

A close up as we press down on the roll

Matcha Hokkaido Azuki Swiss Roll. Asanoya’s take on this swiss roll is a light and fluffy version that is a bit on the sweet side. We thought that the ratio of the sponge to whipped vanilla cream to azuki cream was rather well balanced and we liked the velvety red bean cream!

Matcha Swiss Roll Rocky Masters 2

Among all the Matcha – red bean swiss rolls that we tried, this was our favorite. Green tea swiss roll filled with smooth yet sweet red bean paste. The red bean paste has the texture of the 50 cents potong red bean ice cream that you find in Mama shops. Our only gripe is its petite size (size of polar swiss roll) and the slighty dry texture on the exterior layer.

Other than the swiss rolls we had in Singapore, we had some while on our travels as well and thought that we will include them in this post as well. Of which, Chanowa in Hong Kong remains as our all-time favorite swiss roll, better than Redpan. We can’t wait to fly to Japan to try out more!

Matcha Roll Cake (HKD 150) was one of the best matcha roll cake I have tried. Texture of the swiss roll was soft and the rich and dense matcha cream that oozes out upon the slightest touch was nothing short of amazing! Prices does not come cheap but this is surely a MUST try for any matcha fan.

Uji Matcha Cake Roll 宇治森半抹茶蛋糕捲 (TWD 170)

MOLTEN LAVA matcha roll cake – mixed regular cream with matcha cream. While the sponge layer might not be the best we have had, the oozing matcha lava is enough to make you go weak in your knees over it.

P.S. They have a really nice exterior area for OOTD!

Osulloc 오설록

Address: 1235-3 Seogwang-ri, Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do, South Korea (Google Map)

Price: KRW 5000 for a slice and KRW 18000 for a whole roll

Opening Hours: 9am – 6pm daily

LinkFacebook / Webpage

We guess when we say where to hunt for matcha swiss roll in South Korea, Osulloc is the first name that pops up in most peoples’ mind. We preferred their rich bittersweet green tea latte to the matcha swiss roll which has a texture more likened to that of a chiffon cake.
